Back in 2022 we received a request to supply funding from our Eco Fund to a small charity based in Cornwall, Our Only World. Their mission is to help restore ocean health and prevent single-use plastic pollution at the source by installing water refill stations.
One of their projects aimed to replicate work carried out in Australia to colonise sea walls through the installation of specially engineered hexagonal habitat panels in Plymouth. The results from using these Living Seawalls in Australia was a 36% increase in species compared to unmodified walls, including as many as 85 species of invertebrates, seaweeds, and fish.
The Eco Fund committee was so inspired by the charity’s mission that they agreed to provide the full funding amount the project required, rather than the proportion they had requested. Since then the charity has secured further funding from other partners to expand their project.
Marine construction has a major impact on marine biodiversity through the destruction of important habitats. These structures are for a multitude of purposes, such as seawalls, energy generation, and shoreline protection, and most of these structures have smooth walls that do not provide the correct texture for marine species to colonise. The Living Seawalls panels that were funded by DPD have so far been colonised by macroalgae, a key species to support the marine food chain and provide habitat for other species through their adult stage large sheltered canopies. There have also been a number of marine snails, crabs, barnacles, and bryozoans as early settlers on the panels.
It is wonderful to see the impact this project has had on both the local community and marine biodiversity in these locations, and it’s especially fulfilling to know that DPD’s initial funding helped catalyse further donations to increase the scale of the project.
